On my healing journey, poetry has been very comforting and reassuring. It feels like a warm blanket wrapped around me.
I would like to look at an excerpt from the following poem by Danna Faulds:
“Go in and in. Be the space between two cells, the vast, resounding silence in which spirit dwells. Be sugar dissolving on the tongue of life. Dive in and in, as deep as you can dive. Go in and in and turn away from nothing that you find.”
I find this poem very inspiring. It encourages me to go for it and not hold back. It is especially motivating on days where I want to stay under the covers.
When I feel lonely, this pushes me. It tells me of the vastness of life, that there is so much to explore, to love.
Resonating with poems
There are poems that resonate so much with you that they make your heart race as if they have been written especially for you. You just read them and you feel them deep inside. You’ve been there, you’ve felt every line.
Perhaps they even speak about a current situation. There are unforgettable ones that somehow become part of you. It helps to know that someone else went through the exact same thing at a certain point in time. You don’t feel alone anymore.
We are complicated beings. We can be both emotional and cold. We can be strong and soft. Sometimes we are so complicated that we feel that no one can relate to our journey. We feel unique but lonely and wounded deep inside.
However, when we stumble across a poem that seems to have been written entirely for us, we can heal. A few words written long ago can give us so much strength and determination. First they touch us, then they help us rise again.
Discovering ourselves through poems
Sometimes the right poem can describe traits that we have been struggling with for ages. We can find solace in those comforting lines because they can give us a sense of belonging.
The moment when something or someone speaks to your soul is simply magic. Allow yourself to be a bit more vulnerable but at the same time to gain more strength by reading poetry.
Poetry also expresses emotions and feelings that some of us can’t put into words. Poets are gifted to let these thoughts out so beautifully and perhaps so painfully that we get that ‘aha’ moment as we relate to them. It can happen for us to read a poem that talks about emotions that we were never able to describe, yet they were consuming us.
This brings priceless clarity. It is not out of the question to suddenly realize what you have been missing for so long or to discover things about yourself that you didn’t acknowledge before. Seeing things that have been hidden through the lens of poetry can even be life-changing.
Words matter and the right ones can be extremely powerful. The healing words of poetry can clarify important aspects and alleviate pain. They can help you understand and then allow you to move on.
